FAQ
1. How will my son benefit from BORN?
Baltimore BORN is an academically challenging, culturally enriching, and opportunity filled single sex program for boys in grades 6-12. It is our goal that the boys enrolled in BORN stay with us through graduation from high school. To achieve this mission, participants in Baltimore BORN will be expected to:
- Develop critical thinking and writing skills
- Thoughtfully evaluate ideas of manhood in our society
- Encounter new experiences and see these experiences as opportunities for personal and community growth
- Draw on a network of professional and personal support in a journey toward college graduation
- Participate in public service projects that demonstrate an understanding of contemporary problems in Baltimore and beyond
2. How and why did BORN get started?
The founder of the program is Baltimore Raven Domonique Foxworth. Domonique knows that if not for the opportunities, resources and networks provided by those around him while he was growing up, he would not enjoy the success he does today. Through Baltimore BORN he would like to provide that same support to others so they too can achieve their dreams.
After extensive research, it was determined that there was a lack of academically challenging programs for boys in Baltimore City and BORN was designed to fill that void.
3. What role will Domonique Foxworth have in the program?
Domonique has been the driving force behind Baltimore BORN since its inception. Domonique began with a vision and then selected two experts in the field with whom to work. Domonique has been involved in every step of the process from designing the curriculum to selecting organizations and schools with which to partner for the pilot program. Domonique plans on attending as many after-school sessions as possible and the Saturday field trips.
4. What are the necessary time requirements for a BORN participant?
BORN participants will be expected to attend a two hour meeting every Tuesday from 4:30-6:30pm and at least one Saturday field trip per month. In addition, they will be asked to do some reading a few nights a week and write short journal entries.
5. What are the financial obligations for a BORN participant?
The pilot program of Baltimore BORN is being offered free of charge to all participants.
6. What does BORN offer my son that he will not receive from the Baltimore City School System?
As a small, independent organization, Baltimore BORN has the unique ability to create a program tailored to the specific needs of the youth we serve.
7. What if I cannot provide adequate transportation for my child to attend BORN events?
BORN participants are responsible for getting to and from the program location at Baltimore School for the Arts. However, we are happy to provide bus passes at no charge to the family. In addition, BORN will provide transportation to and from all field trips.
8. How many boys will be accepted this year?
This is the pilot program of Baltimore BORN. There are two sites. The program at Baltimore School for the Arts will run on Tuesday evenings and there will be 7-8 students enrolled. The program at Dr. Bernard Harris will run on Wednesdays and will enroll between 7-10 students. The groups will join together for the Saturday field trips.
9. I understand this is a pilot program of Baltimore BORN. Will my son have to reapply next year when the full program begins?
